[kuty'ra], Louis, französischer Philosoph und Mathematiker, * Paris 17. 1. 1868, ✝ (Unfall) bei Ris-Orangis (bei Paris) 3. 8. 1914; war Professor in Toulouse und Caen, seit 1905 am Collège de France in Paris. Couturat ist einer der Mitbegründer der mathematischen Logik, wobei er zum Teil an G. W. Leibniz und dessen Bemühungen um die Konstruktion von Logikkalkülen anknüpfte (seine Leibnizforschungen führten u. a. zur Herausgabe unveröffentlichter Fragmente von Leibniz zur Logik und Sprachphilosophie). Er arbeitete über den Unendlichkeitsbegriff in der Mathematik, auch über die Mythen in Platons Staat und die »Antinomien« in der kantischen Philosophie. Angeregt durch Leibniz' Vorstellung einer Universalsprache, entwickelte Couturat mit Léopold Léau, in Anlehnung an das Esperanto, die Kunstsprache »Ido« (»Histoire de la langue universelle«, 1903; mit Léau).
